One of the last stern-wheelers on the upper Missouri takes on grain from North Dakota's Knife River settlements at the county landing in 1905. Shallow water and sandbars notwithstanding, the river still provided the cheapest way to move freight to the railroad at Bismarck. The storage shed and crude loading chute were minimal improvements; cargo was piled on the dirt bank. Though settled and farmed, this country was still very new.
