One of the last generation of whaleback freighters steams into Lake Superior from St. Louis Bay, Duluth-Superior, in 1920, past the predecessors of today's aerial lift bridge and breakwater. One of the fleet of famous Great Lakes passenger liners is visible below the smoke plume, and a bit of central Duluth's impresssive, turn-of-the-century facade of dockside warehouses projects above the freighter's bow.
